The Armrest Tug-of-War

The middle seat passenger is often considered to have ownership of both shared armrests, but regardless of where you are seated, an aggressive neighbour can monopolise the space. The most effective way to address armrest encroachment is through subtle, non-verbal communication rather than an immediate verbal challenge. Wait until the passenger temporarily shifts their weight or moves their arm, then slowly and deliberately claim your half of the shared armrest, ensuring your elbow occupies your rightful space.

If the situation requires a verbal request, keep the tone light and focus on your need for physical ease rather than their imposition. A polite request such as, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m struggling to get comfortable. Would you mind if we shared the armrest a little more equally?” frames the issue as a mutual concern over comfort rather than an aggressive demand for territory, which usually leads to a much more cooperative outcome.
