What You Should Really Eat on a Plane

Flat Lay Photography of Three Tray of Foods

Airline meals might seem convenient, but they’re often packed with salt and sugar. Why? Research shows that the dry cabin air and reduced pressure dull your sense of taste—especially for salty and sweet flavours—by up to 30%. To compensate, airlines increase seasoning to make meals more palatable in the air.

Unfortunately, this can leave you feeling bloated, dehydrated or sluggish—particularly on longer flights.

A better choice is to opt for lighter, fresher food. Salads and fruit salads are easier to digest, naturally hydrating, and don’t rely on heavy seasoning. Bringing your own snacks like nuts, wholegrain crackers or dried fruit also helps you stay in control of your nutrition.

Tips to eat well in the air:

  • Pack your own fresh, light meals or snacks.
  • Avoid salty, processed options.
  • Drink plenty of water—avoid alcohol or fizzy drinks.
  • Pre-order healthier meal options if available.
