Under the Sun: Skin-Safe Travel Tips for Every Adventure

When you’re exploring new places — from tropical forests to sunny beaches — it’s easy to forget about protecting your skin. But too much sun can cause painful sunburn, premature ageing, dark spots, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Luckily, there are simple and effective ways to stay safe while enjoying the sunshine.

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, shows how well a sunscreen shields your skin from UVB rays — the main cause of sunburn. Experts recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50, especially if you have fair or sensitive skin or are in strong sun. SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays, compared to 97% for SPF 30. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming and sweating.

Another great way to protect your skin is by wearing UPF-rated clothing, which is designed to block harmful UV rays. Many brands offer lightweight, breathable options, including shirts, leggings, and wide-brimmed hats.

You can also support your skin with antioxidant-rich skincare containing ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide or green tea extract. These help defend against sun-related damage.

For extra coverage, try tinted mineral sunscreens, which combine SPF protection with a light tint to even out your skin tone.

Don’t forget your eyes — sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays (look for UV400 protection) are essential. Whether you prefer sporty or classic styles there are so many brands available. Make sure you plan ahead so you are forced into making a rushed purchase which isn’t ideal.

Protecting your skin isn’t about hiding from the sun — it’s about enjoying it wisely. With the right habits and gear, you can explore the world while keeping your skin healthy and glowing.
