Striking up conversations with strangers when travelling can be a rewarding experience and sometimes in ways that you never expected.
My two-month Greyhound Bus trip around America resulted in more strange and unusual conversations than any period during my life so far. They ranged from the interesting lady who had just had breast enhancement surgery. She wished to share the before and after pictures with me at the breakfast stop to the hippie who was convinced that the bus driver was quizzing passengers and threatening to throw them off the bus if they answered the question incorrectly. I reassured him it was just a dream or a nightmare. You take your pick.
Not only is New Zealand a stunning country the locals are so friendly and nice people. On one occasion I found myself going around for a Sunday Roast with a family after meeting Mum who worked at the local tourist office. That was a treat and a half after eating instant noodle dishes for months on end!
Here’s why it can be great to strike up a conversation with a stranger!
1. Local Insights
Locals often have the best insights into their community. Conversations with strangers can provide you with valuable information about hidden gems, local customs, recommended eateries, and off-the-beaten-path attractions that might not be in guidebooks.

Traveling is not just about seeing places; it’s also about connecting with people. Striking up conversations can lead to meaningful connections, and you might make new friends along the way. These connections can enhance your travel experience and potentially lead to future opportunities.
5. Local Recommendations
Locals are often the best sources for recommendations on where to eat, what to do, and how to make the most of your time in a particular destination. Striking up a conversation can lead to valuable tips and suggestions that enhance your itinerary.
6. Overcoming Language Barriers
Engaging with locals allows you to practice and improve your language skills. Even if there is a language barrier, the effort to communicate is often appreciated, and locals may go out of their way to help you understand or be understood.
7. Spontaneous Discoveries
Conversations with strangers can lead to spontaneous discoveries. You might learn about events, festivals, or activities happening in the area that you wouldn’t have known about otherwise.
8. Cultural Etiquette
Locals can provide insights into cultural norms and etiquette, helping you navigate social situations with greater ease. Understanding local customs and behaviours contributes to a more respectful and enjoyable travel experience.
9. Shared Experiences
Conversations with strangers create shared moments and experiences. Whether it’s a brief chat with a local vendor or a more in-depth discussion with fellow travellers, these shared moments can become highlights of your journey.
10. Feeling Welcomed
Initiating conversations with strangers can create a sense of warmth and welcome. Many people appreciate the effort to connect, and this positive energy can contribute to a more friendly and inviting atmosphere in the places you visit.
While striking up conversations with strangers can be rewarding, it’s essential to be mindful of cultural differences and individual preferences. Always respect personal boundaries, and be aware of social cues to ensure that your interactions are positive and enjoyable for everyone involved.
