The Reclining Seat Invasion

An immediate, aggressive recline can crush a laptop, spill a drink, or trap the passenger behind. The key to handling this amicably is swift action tied to a specific activity. If the seat is reclined while you are working or eating, politely tap the passenger and say, “Excuse me, I apologise for interrupting, but could I trouble you to bring your seat forward just while I finish my meal/while I use my laptop? I’m worried it might spill/get damaged.”

This focuses the request on a temporary necessity, making it easier for them to comply. Once you have finished your activity, smile and thank them, perhaps confirming they can now recline fully again. If the issue is persistent kicking or pulling on your seat back, a quick, quiet turn with soft words – “Excuse me, I’m feeling every bump on the back of my seat, could you please try to be a little gentler?” – is often enough to correct the unconscious behaviour.
