When you’re flying for hours in a sealed cabin, it’s easy to forget how important hydration is. The air inside a plane is far drier than what you’re used to on the ground, leading to faster moisture loss through breathing and evaporation. Even mild dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness and dry skin—all of which can make your journey far less comfortable.
Surprisingly, many travellers reach for alcohol, coffee or sugary drinks on board—choices that actually worsen dehydration. But just as important as drinking water is making sure it’s clean.
While it might be tempting to refill your bottle in the plane’s bathroom, it’s best to avoid doing so. The water in onboard taps comes from holding tanks that may not be regularly cleaned or properly maintained. This water is not intended for drinking and could carry microbial risks. Though generally safe for washing hands, it’s not suitable for consumption—even in small amounts like brushing your teeth.
How to Enjoy Your Flight:
- Bring a reusable bottle and fill it at a clean source in the airport before boarding.
- Drink water regularly—aim for a small glass every hour.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and overly sweet drinks, which can dehydrate you further.
- Use bottled water provided by the crew for drinking and oral hygiene.
- Sanitise hands after using the lavatory instead of rinsing with tap water.
