When packing for a trip, one of the biggest mistakes travellers make is leaving too much empty space in their luggage. While it might seem like a good idea to keep extra room for souvenirs, an underfilled bag allows your belongings to shift and jostle during transit, increasing the risk of breakages or creased clothes.
To keep everything secure, make sure you use packing cubes. Packing cubes are especially useful, as they not only maximise space by compressing clothes but also keep your belongings neatly organised, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your suitcase.
When transporting fragile items, make sure they are placed in the middle of a packing organiser which holds them securely in place. Make sure the packing cube with the item is in the centre of your luggage and not resting against the bottom or top of the suitcase for added safety. If the item is small enough, it can be placed inside socks and then inside a pair of shoes.
I also recommend packing a few extra pairs of underwear and T-shirts—just in case. Whether you encounter unexpected weather changes, an accidental spill, or need to extend your laundry cycle, having spares can be a lifesaver.
Another great tip is to bring a few small plastic containers. They’re perfect for transporting local snacks without the risk of them getting crushed in your suitcase. For added protection, consider using zip-top bags filled with air as makeshift cushions around fragile items. These act as shock absorbers and can be deflated when you need extra space. Bonus: they double as waterproof storage for electronics or liquids! Klipits, reusable sealing clips for plastic bags, are another useful item to take. I always pack a few Klipits, so that when I reach into my travel bag for an open bag of snacks, I don’t find the contents swimming around the bottom with all the fluff and grit.
