Keep Your Cool: A Traveller’s Guide to Dodging Sunstroke

Blimey, when you’re off exploring new corners of the globe, the last thing you want is to be knocked for six by the heat. Sunstroke, or heatstroke as some call it, is a proper nuisance and can be really dangerous if you’re not careful. The key is to be sensible before it even thinks about setting in. Think of it like this: keep yourself well-watered throughout the day – like you’re watering a prize-winning marrow. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip on it regularly, especially if you’re hoofing it about seeing the sights. Lay off the booze too, as it’ll only dehydrate you faster.

Another good shout is to dress for the weather, even if you’re desperate to show off your holiday threads. Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes are your best mates in the heat. Slap on some decent sunscreen – even on cloudy days, the sun can be sneaky. And don’t be a hero! If the sun’s blazing, find some shade for a bit. Duck into a cafe for a cuppa or find a nice shady tree to park yourself under for a breather. Now, if you suspect someone has sunstroke, the main thing is to get them out of the sun straight away and try to cool them down quickly. Splash them with cool water, or use cold compresses if you’ve got them, and get medical help pronto. A bit of planning and a few simple habits can make all the difference between a cracking holiday and feeling utterly rotten. Stay safe and enjoy your travels!
