Heading stateside soon? Before you zip up that suitcase, there’s a crucial heads-up for British holidaymakers! New rules from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mean several common battery-powered items are now strictly off-limits in your checked luggage. To avoid a last-minute scramble or, worse, having your bags delayed, make sure you keep the following seven items out of your main case:
- Power banks
- Phone charging cases
- Extra lithium-ion batteries
- Extra lithium-metal batteries
- Phone batteries
- Laptop batteries
- External battery packs or portable chargers
These items, due to the fire risk posed by their lithium batteries, must now travel with you in your carry-on. It’s not just about what’s in your main case, either. Remember the usual drill for your hand luggage: liquids need to be in containers of 100ml or less and fit into a clear, resealable plastic bag. Keep an eye out for other prohibited items like lighters and certain sharp objects, which are also a no-go in your cabin baggage. A quick double-check of both your airline’s and the TSA’s guidelines before you fly will ensure a smooth journey and get your American adventure off to the perfect start!
